Should it be against the law for children to skip school?

In many states it is required by law that children of a certain age must attend school. Since it is required by law there could be fines, penalties and even jail time involved for a truancy violation. These penalties can be used against the parent, student or both. For example according to the article, Should Parents Go To Jail if Their Kid Skips School? , in Illinois, excessive absences—nine  unexcused absences or more—are considered a form of child neglect, a misdemeanor that can carry a penalty for parents of up to 30 days in jail and a $1,500 fine. With respect to students in some states their driving privileges can be revoked for not attending school. Do you agree or disagree with these laws? Why or why not.
