Pract The Facts:

Has Barack Obama Done Enough For African Americans During His Presidency?

Background:

The election for 2016 is over but remaining are many controversial observations that continue to haunt outgoing President Obama.  One major issue that has been woven through his presidency is that he has not done enough for black people.  Both black and white commentators and politicians have used this as a way to dampen the president’s legacy.  Below we have two quotes…one by Donald Trump made during his election campaign and another by African American talk show host Tavis Smiley.   Is there any validity to these comments that can be supported by facts? Pract The facts on these comments and  come to your own conclusions on their validity.

Pract The Facts

Read the quote below.  Do the research to determine if the quote is factually correct.  After you have done your research prepare a summary citing your research detailing your view on the accuracy of the quote. After you make your decision decide what action you can take with respect to the issue

The Quotes:

"He has done nothing for African Americans. You look at what's gone on with their income levels. You look at what's gone on with their youth. I thought that he would be a great cheerleader for this country. I thought he'd do a fabulous job for the African-American citizens of this country. He has done nothing," Trump said.

"They have problems now in terms of unemployment numbers, look at their unemployment numbers. And you have— here you have a black president who's done very poorly for the African Americans of this country," Trump added.

Tavis Smiley an African American Commentator has also said similar things about the president.

Tavis Smiley:” I’m not sure we are and I think ultimately the president missed a moment… On every leading economic issue, in the leading economic issues Black Americans have lost ground in every one of those leading categories. So in the last ten years it hasn’t been good for black folk. This is the president’s most loyal constituency that didn’t gain any ground in that period.”
